I am still being held prisoner, but with a twist. Apparently we can shelter out of place, and have some freedom of movement. And perhaps the worst thing imaginable has occurred: We have choices again.
It was so much easier to wake up and do the same thing every day – to have no choice. Wake up, coffee, work out, breakfast, lunch, and so on until bedtime – – you get the picture. And this probably paints your picture as well.
But now we wake up in the morning and ask each other “What do you want to do today” and don’t mean it rhetorically.
One of our activities remains shopping at the WD, but our routine has evolved. Apparently gloves are recommended, so I wore my old catcher’s mitt on the last trip. I think the other shoppers thought it was smart, as I saw whispering and pointing as I went by. And my captor gave me a mask to wear – made of saran wrap – which had great visibility, but made it difficult to breathe. I hope that is not a C19 symptom. I also have found that if one has a coughing fit every aisle or two, you see very few other shoppers. And it really thins the crowd when being served at the deli counter and asked if they can help you, to reply: “Not sure – my lungs feel like they’re on fire and I’ve lost my sense of taste and smell”, and you can buy all the meat you want.
The man she calls “The Governor” must be a vindictive fellow, because he reopened the beaches and everyone said he was trying to kill us. Maybe fear of being impaled by an umbrella? He also reopened restaurants, and everyone said he was trying to kill us. But the good news is that with the social distancing requirements, he will kill us in groups of 10 or less.
We now have curb side pickup down to an art form: Yesterday we slowed to 20 MPH and were still able to grab our order.
But we are careful about outside items: My captor got flowers for Mothers Day – but after she finished wiping them down all the petals had fallen off. And speaking of captors, I hear May 17th will be National Captivity Day, which is the day before National Bullshit Holiday day.
Playing games keeps us engaged and alert. This week’s favorite: Can we find a Hallmark movie that doesn’t end happily?
While this has gone on seemingly forever, it sure feels like it is ending so quickly.
The road goes on forever, and the party never ends
