Mommy said she and Daddy would be married for 10 years!
And they’d be going away for a weekend celebration.
But she said, “Don’t worry –
Queenie and PA will take care of you!”
Take care of us?
We take care of them!
We know the house rules, the routine, the way to school,
But it pays to make them think they’re in charge.
They came on Monday, our parents leaving Thursday,
Apparently, a St. Patrick Corned Beef dinner Wednesday, 6 couples invited,
We know Queenie’s a great cook, Corned Beef her specialty,
But you do know the whole meal’s boiled, right?
PA’s a sucker for donuts, we always get a Krispy Kreme trip.
And a chocolate milk at the store.
We pretend like we’re interested in the donut making guy,
It delights PA – he always takes a picture of us at the window, and posts it.
To the family group. Whatever that means.
A big part of our ‘wear down’ strategy for Queenie and PA is an early start.
My brother and I up by 6, allowed to get them at 6:30,
But we’re 15 minutes early some days – wearing them down.
They are old, you know?
I had a soccer game on Saturday, the 3 of us went with Queenie and PA,
I like soccer, but don’t like watching when I’m out,
That seemed to irritate Queenie, who thought I should be “paying attention”,
That’s what I do all week in school – pardon me if my mind wanders on the weekend.
The soccer game was a real chore for Queenie and PA,
Based on their comments: “Dull, dusty, and that kid kept hitting Hugh and John”.
And it lasted a whole hour, which is a lot longer for them than us,
They are old, you know?
My brothers did admit they’re pretty good at driving them to preschool,
And they let them get out of their car seats in the drop off line.
They were waiting at the corner when the bus dropped me off,
So, they are reliable. I guess.
There are some things we pretend to like – but really do.
The PA bath and PA book reading are two,
We got a 2nd PA bath after the soccer game, we were so dusty,
As PA says, “I do all the stuff you hate – washing your hair and faces – first,
So then you can enjoy yourselves”.
He’s right. But we still scream during the hair wash.
As PA says, can’t fight it…
The other thing we don’t pretend to like – we actually do! – is Queenie’s baking.
That girl sure can bake!
But we make sure to tell her how much we like everything, so she gives us seconds.
We love Queenie, but we really love her baking!
The weekend went great – don’t tell Queenie and PA, though.
We wanted donuts again on Sunday, but Queenie made pancakes.
They were quite good – we all had seconds.
Better than donuts – don’t tell PA, though.
Mommy and Daddy came home on Sunday, we were very excited to see them.
They had a great time, the resort amazing.
We went to Pizza Peel for dinner, which we love.
We all got a lemonade – Hugh an OJ, that kid’s got different taste,
Went home and PA read us four books.
Monday morning, Queenie and PA left for home early.
We miss them, but they’ll be back,
We know they love us, we can feel it,
And they know we love them, they can feel it,
But hopefully they were able to get some sleep,
They looked tired – they are old, you know?

I love the song ‘New Town’ and “The Leanover’ by Life Without Buildings, added to the BATN playlist. An
art school band that de-formed in 2002, but their album a good bit of fun.
Good job !! Glad you kids took good care of Pa and Queenie. You just have to keep them busy, otherwise they get into trouble and find weird things to do. Like fixing stuff, and cleaning and arranging things. Just make sure they’re not too tired to go home. Their friends miss them and will take care of them in St. Simon’s.
Happy Easter to the family🐣❤️
I wish mine realized I’m really old, but I guess why should they? I’m always 30 in my mind.😂
